Smokey Hazelton

October 7, 2007 — January 19, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Smokey Caballero Hazelton, affectionately known to his family as Sssshhmoke Dawg, Smokey Wokie, and Viejito. Smokey, a beautiful Russian Blue DLH, was adopted on October 7, 2007, and claimed his place in our hearts and home, leaving us far too soon on January 19, 2026.

Smokey's journey began in 2007 when he and his little sibling were brought into an animal control shelter, having lost their mother. A kind soul took them in to foster and nurture them. With eyes not yet open, Smokey was welcomed into a loving family that would come to cherish every moment with him. From that day forward, he became more than just a pet; he was a companion, a friend, and a vital member of the family.

He was a resilient spirit with a personality that shone brightly in everything he did. Smokey had a captivating charm that won the hearts of not only his human family but also the grandbabies who adored him from the start. He proved time and again that he had more than just nine lives; he seemed to thrive in every moment spent with his loved ones, facing challenges with unwavering bravery and an insatiable love for life.

His days were filled with sun-soaked lounging and joyful naps, a favorite pastime that showcased his relaxed demeanor. Smokey loved to help wrap gifts, bringing laughter and joy into every festive occasion. The playful chase of laser lights ignited his adventurous side, proving that a simple game could bring endless happiness.

As he transitioned into his senior years, Smokey refined his palate. While a dedicated cat food connoisseur in his earlier days, he soon developed a taste for human delicacies. Turkey from the deli, pizza, popcorn, and creamy ice cream became some of his most beloved treats, along with a special fondness for whipped cream.

Among the many treasured memories that will forever remain in our hearts is the time Smokey had an incident during one of his infamous late-night zoomies. His resilience and determination were on full display when he suffered an injury, spending nearly a week at the vet. Thanks to his stout heart and love for food, he pulled through with the same vibrancy he'd shown throughout his life.

Smokey brought comfort and companionship during tough times, never leaving the side of his beloved human, Marlenia, during her multiple surgeries. With an intuition that always seemed to know when he was needed most, he exemplified loyalty and unconditional love, making him a true member of the family.

He leaves behind a loving family, including Deanna, Marlenia, James Dakota, Taylor, and numerous grandchildren who will fondly remember him for all the joy he brought into their lives. Smokey was a regal presence, the king of his castle, who greeted everyone with curiosity and warmth, leaving an indelible mark on everyone he met.

He shared his life with beloved pet siblings: his little brother, Ozzy Pawsbourne (Prince of Barkness), his little pitbull sister, Lady, little bearded dragon brother, Flame, lil Cockatiel brother, Junior, and lil sister DSH Charley. Together they formed a unique, loving family that made every day a delightful adventure.

Shining brightly in the heart of the home, Smokey found his favorite spots to curl up by the fireplace or under the Christmas tree, soaking in the warmth of cherished moments. He let his family know when traveling was not to his liking, making his vocal opinions abundantly clear.

As we say goodbye to our beloved Smokey, we carry with us the memories of his playful spirit, loving presence, and the profound impact he had on our lives. His legacy will forever be a reminder of love, laughter, and the simple joy of companionship. Until we meet again, dear Smokey, may you enjoy endless sunbeams and soft purrs in your eternal rest.
