Nesta Brown, lovingly known as Nestu, passed away on September 1, 2026. Born on January 24, 2015, Nesta was a domestic short-haired cat with a brown and white coat touched with a tiny bit of black, and she filled the years between with steadfast love, bright personality, and unforgettable companionship.
Nesta came into her family’s life at just the right moment. After a move into a new place with two friends and a deep longing for a companion, her person went to the Odessa animal shelter and met Nesta and her siblings, who had been found under a trailer. Even after leaving, Nesta could not be forgotten. She had been meowing and rubbing her head through the cage, and in that simple, tender way, she won the heart of the person who would love her for the rest of her life.
Sweet and deeply loyal, Nesta had a way of making every return home feel special. She would greet her person by rolling onto her back, asking to be petted and cuddled, as if nothing in the world mattered more than that moment together. She loved playing with hair and delighted in her toys, especially a fishing pole toy with a worm and bobber. She also had a special fondness for peek-a-boo, and anyone peeking at her knew there was always a chance of getting bopped. Nesta was full of charm and mischief, including one legendary moment when she lured a bird into the house and “played” with it until it died.
She had a sharp nose when it came to treats and could always seem to sniff out chicken breast or beef jerky. She loved sitting in the window to bird watch and enjoyed going outside to lie under a bush and munch on grass. These small, ordinary pleasures were part of what made her so memorable: a cat content in her favorite spots, alert to the world, and entirely herself.
More than anything, Nesta knew how to love. She connected with people by treating them as family. One of the most cherished ways she showed affection was by climbing onto a shoulder and pressing her full weight beneath a chin, settling there with complete trust and devotion. It was her way of saying she loved you, and those who knew her felt it.
For her person, Nesta was far more than a pet. Adopted at the age of 20, she became a constant through every season that followed. When life brought a move to Austin with no familiar faces, only a blanket on a bare floor, Nesta was there. Through breakups, family loss, and hard days at work, she remained a faithful companion. She was a true ride or die, always present, always loving, and always offering comfort, along with a hopeful interest in treats.
Nesta leaves behind the human who was her true family and who shared life with her so closely, as well as many friends who formed bonds with her and often asked after her. She also leaves behind her son, Mr. Brown, her daughter, Beasley Brown, and her stepbrother, Charles, who later joined the family as an abandoned kitten.
In the hearts of those who loved her, Nesta’s place is secure and lasting. She will be remembered for her sweet loyalty, her funny little bops, her shoulder cuddles, her watchful window perches, and the steady comfort she gave simply by being there. Her life was a gift, and her love will be carried forward always.
